Van driver dies in motorway crash

A man has died in a crash involving two lorries and a van on a busy stretch of motorway.

Emergency crews were called to the M6 southbound, between junction 11 and the Hilton Park Services, between Wolverhampton and Cannock, at 1230 BST.

Paramedics said the driver of the van was confirmed dead at the scene.

The southbound carriageway of the motorway was shut between junction 12 and the services for nearly five hours after the crash, police said.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said one lorry was damaged from behind, the second had minor damage at the front and the van had "significant front-end damage".

She said: "Sadly it quickly became apparent that there was nothing that could be done to save the driver of the van, a man, and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

The driver of one lorry was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital with minor injuries and shock.

No one else was injured.

Police urged anyone who saw the crash to contact them.
